CAPE: A Vision for the Future

Members of the Department are warmly welcomed to the Annual Conference of CU Engineers’ Association on 14th July 2006, in West Cambridge. CAPE: A Vision for the Future celebrates the formation of the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE), an exciting new Cambridge venture based around the world-leading facilities and expertise in the Department of Engineering, coupled with the inauguration of a striking new building for the Electrical Engineering Division. This will be a golden opportunity to see inside the new laboratories and learn about the latest research under way.

CAPE builds on CUED’s history of world-beating research in Photonics and Electronics, and will lead to an entirely new form of joint university-industry research. Support and guidance comes from four strategic partners, all major international players, representing the global supply chain in this sector. It is expected that links will be forged with associate partners who will bring complementary skills and interests to the venture. The most important goal is to promote joint industry-academic research that is leading edge, vertically integrated and commercially relevant.

CAPE is being accommodated on the University’s West Site in a unique custom-designed new building, offering over 4,800 m2 of research laboratory space for the Electrical Division, comprising more than 20 academic staff, 70 post-doctoral researchers and 150 post-graduate students.

Through a combination of keynote lectures, technical presentations and laboratory visits and demonstrations, the conference will introduce the unique model that underpins the new Centre, and its objectives.

Current Members of the University are welcome to attend the lectures, visits and demonstrations and also morning and afternoon refreshments free of charge: however, we do ask that you register so we can be aware of numbers. A buffet luncheon will be available for a fee of £10.

The Conference will be followed by the CUEA Annual Dinner, to be held in the Moeller Centre at 19.00 for 19.30 hours. Non-members will be warmly welcomed. Tickets are available for £50.
