|Dr. Daping Chu||Prof. Bill Crossland|
We are pleased to announce that Dr Daping Chu has been elected as the new Chairman of the CAPE Steering Committee as from 1 October 2009, taking over the post from Professor Bill Crossland, the Chairman during the first five years of the CAPE Partnership who decided to step down from the CAPE Chairmanship on his retirement from the University.
Bill Crossland was one of the founders of CAPE who together brought to reality the concept of an industrial/academic collaboration across the supply chain in the phonetics and electronics industries in which international companies could directly initiate research within the University in confidential and profitable collaboration with their CAPE Partners.
During his term as CAPE Steering Committee Chairman, Bill Crossland was indefatigable in promoting CAPE and its activities and, in liaison with the CAPE Director, Professor Bill Milne, and their colleagues in the CAPE Strategic Partner companies, helped to lead the CAPE Partnership to a successful embodiment of the founders’ aspirations.
Articles which illustrate some aspects of CAPE’s achievements whilst Bill Crossland was Chairman have appeared in Research Horizons (Issue 7, Sep 2008) and New Electronics (cover story, issue dated 24 Nov 2009).
Bill Crossland was also Chairman of the CAPE Intellectual Property Group, which oversees the CAPE IP portfolio on behalf of the CAPE Steering Committee, as well as serving on all four of the CAPE Technology Focus Groups and managing the day-to-day operation of the CAPE Office.
Our profound thanks go to Bill Crossland for all he has done for CAPE over the last five years. Happily, he has agreed to remain in close contact with CAPE during his retirement, having been appointed Emeritus Professor in Photonics by Cambridge University.
The new CAPE Steering Committee Chairman, Dr Daping Chu says: “What has been achieved in CAPE during its first five years is remarkable. CAPE itself has become a symbol of success. CAPE’s value and vision rest with its Strategic Partners. It provides a unique platform for them to interact, to collaborate and to realise these values and vision in a way which is not possible through the usual research collaboration between academia and industry or by business affiliation between industrial companies. We are determined to work with all CAPE participants in its new phase and to continue our journey of exploration for synergy and future success.”
Bill Milne says: “it is great to have Daping on board as Chairman and I look forward to seeing him further promote and extend CAPE activities over the next few years. I would also like to thank Bill Crossland for all his contributions throughout the first 5 years of CAPE. The success achieved in that time would not have been possible without his invaluable input.”
